Each year, the AAPD and Healthy Smiles, Healthy Children recognize those who have made significant contributions to the advancement of children's oral health by presenting awards to them at the Annual Session. Recipients will be announced and honored with a plaque at the Presidents' Farewell Dinner at the 62nd Annual Session, Sunday, May 24, 2009, in Honolulu, Hawaii. These awards are described below. Healthy Smiles, Healthy Children: The Foundation of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry is accepting applications for the Healthy Smiles, Healthy Children/Dentsply Research Poster Competition. The Research Competition will take place on Friday, May 22, and Saturday, May 23, 2009, at the 2009 AAPD Annual Session in Honolulu, Hawaii.

HSHC Director Accepts New Position

Healthy Smiles, Healthy Children Foundation Director Dr. Robert Vitas, Ph.D., CRFE, has accepted a position as Vice President of the Institute of Food Technologists Foundation http://www.ift.org.

Vitas has been with the AAPD for four and a half years and has overseen tremendous growth in the foundation in terms of funds and projects. He demonstrated tremendous leadership and insight on the HSHC name change and rebranding process. Vitas has also been very active with the American Society of Dental Foundation Executives, the Association of Fundraising Professionals, and the Association Forum of Chicagoland.

We will all miss Bob's professionalism and good humor, and wish him the best of luck in his transition.

Healthy Smiles, Healthy Children Announces Disaster Relief Grants

Thousands of people have been affected by hurricanes, including AAPD members. Healthy Smiles, Healthy Children: The Foundation of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry has announced the availability of grants from its Disaster Relief Fund.

Auction Raises All-Time High Proceeds to Benefit Healthy Smiles, Healthy Children

Healthy Smiles, Healthy Children's 12th Annual Silent and Live Auction was a huge success raising $41,700 net proceeds -- the highest amount ever raised from our auction. Thank you to all of our sponsors, donors, and bidders for supporting our cause. The proceeds from this year's auction go towards the promotion and support of oral health care research, education, service and policy development that advances the oral health of infants and children. Over 40 items were up for auction on May 24, including travel, sports, jewelry, food and beverage, continuing education, dental supplies, and a surprise donation of a piece of AAPD president history!
